REQUIREMENTS
  • 1+ years of sommelier experience
  • Knowledge of all Italian and American wine growing regions
  • Ability to develop & manage an expansive wine program
  • Ability to provide polished, guest-focused service appropriate to a fine dining environment
  • An unparalleled passion for both wine & service
     
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certification from Court of Master Sommeliers
  • High-level fine dining experience
  • Skilled in leading wine education classes & sharing knowledge with guests

  POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the selling and serving of bottled wine. A Sommelier will possess a current Sommelier certification. 
 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Other duties will be assigned as needed) Must be willing and able to do the following:
  • Develop the wine menu for the restaurant.
  • Coordinate all ordering of wine for the restaurant.
  • Maintain professional relationships with purveyors, and must not accept gifts or cash in return for wine or liquor orders.
  • Account for and maintain the security of all wine inventories and restock wines used in proper cabinets and/or wine coolers.
  • Organize the wine and liquor storage areas and read and identify wines by using labels.
  • Accurately account for and balance all sales and receipts.
  • Be knowledgeable of all menu items, and be able to develop wine pairings.
  • Greet guests with a warm and sincere smile.
  • Work with Captains/Servers to visit tables to present suggested wines.
  • Follow proper wine service procedures. 
  • Be genuinely committed to ensuring the overall guest experience exceeds expectations.
  • Act as a lead for the Wine Runner position. 
  • Attend wine seminars on a regular basis.
  • Provide wine education and training to new and existing employees.
  • Update wine training materials.
  • Assist Maitre d’/host with greeting and seating of guests if needed.
  • Conduct wine tastings.
  • Do not over serve guests, and seek out management immediately with any concerns about a guest who may appear to be intoxicated.
  • Assist servers and cocktail servers with selling, opening and serving wine.
  • Check back with tables which have ordered wine.
  • Accurately account for and inventory all wine sales for the shift.
  • Become proficient in the restaurant’s POS system within five days.
  • Secure manager’s signature for any comped or voided items.
  • Move safely through all areas of the restaurant, which may include stairs, uneven and slick surfaces.
  • Must wash hands regularly, according to guidelines.
  • Comply with all safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures.
  • Pass a food and beverage test in English with a score of 90% or more.
  • Pass an Alcohol Awareness test in English with a score of 90% or more.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Understand and complete all sidework as assigned.
  • Be able to stand and walk for an entire shift.
  • Be able to give and take direction, and work effectively within a team.
  • Communicate cordially, effectively and clearly with all employees, managers and guests.
  • Communicate in English in order to comprehend and perform/follow job requirements in written and spoken direction.
  • Perform more than one task at a time.
  • Maintain a positive, pleasant attitude every shift. 
  • Accept direction and constructive criticism from management.
  • Perform calmly and effectively in an extremely busy and stressful work environment.
  • Be able to work a variety of hours, days and shifts, including weekends and increased work schedules.
  • Work in a confined, crowded space of variable noise and temperature levels.
  • Lift and move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 GENERAL RULES Must be willing and able to do the following:
  • Get along with others and be a team player.
  • Follow all uniform and appearance guidelines as befitting the image of the restaurant for the duration of the shift.
  • Refrain from smoking for the duration of the shift.
  • Arrive to work on time and in ready to work condition.
  • Follow all rules, policies, procedures and conditions of employment outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • May not work under the influence of alcohol or any illegal drugs.
  • May not resort to any type of violence, discriminatory or harassing behavior.
  • Must successfully pass a drug and alcohol test within 90 days of hire date, where applicable.
