Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants (LEYE) is seeking an experienced DIRECTOR OF EMPLOYEE RELATIONS to join their Human Resources team.

We’re looking for a confident, caring person to lead and oversee employee relations at all levels, and to ensure that our philosophy of taking care of our employees is embraced and practiced.

The Director of Employee Relations will investigate and resolve employment-related issues, performance issues, policy violations, claims, charges, and other workplace matters.

The Director of Employee Relations position is located out of our corporate office on the far north side of Chicago. 
 

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of employee relations experience at the corporate level (multi-unit and/or multi-state experience is a big plus)
  • Experience in managing people, both small and large teams
  • Knowledge of multi-state labor law and federal/state mandatory compliance
  • Highly skilled in communication/listening, analytical thinking and problem solving
  • Ability to coach, train and develop management on best employee relations practices
  • Flexible availability for 30% travel to local and out-of-state locations as needed
Strong HR generalist background preferred; verbal/written Spanish language skills are a big plus.

Job Summary 

Lead and oversee employee relations for the Company. Model and ensure that LEYE’s Culture of Caring is practiced at all levels. Be an advocate and resource to both management and employees. Investigate and resolve employment-related issues, performance issues, policy violations and other workplace matters.

Essential Functions
 
  • Assist and support the stores in all aspects of employee and labor relations
  • Act as an advocate and resource to employees at all levels  
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and enforce compliance with applicable laws and regulations in all geographic markets
  • Develop, implement and manage policies, training and procedures that reflect our Culture of Caring to maintain a respectful workplace and ensure that company policies and fair employment practices and standards are being met, understood and adhered to
  • Coach, train and develop management on best employment practices and on positive employee relations
  • Regularly visit restaurants in all markets to obtain and respond to employee feedback and to gauge employee engagement levels as well as employee/management relations
  • Conduct and accurately document thorough, impartial investigations of employee relations matters of all types and recommend appropriate courses of action to partners and management teams
  • Investigate and respond to unemployment claims and hearings 
  • Investigate and respond to formal and informal legal claims from employees, attorneys and/or government agencies (EEOC/Human Rights, etc.), working with legal counsel/advisors as necessary
  • Oversee the Lettuce Help You Fund requests and administration
  • Coach and collaborate with management teams to foster our Culture of Caring through on-going, thoughtful communications with employees 
  • Participate in employee feedback sessions (Breakfast Meetings and/or Employee Surveys) on an annual basis and develop recommendations for each store based on that feedback
  • Hire, train and develop a team to assist with employee and labor relations
  • Schedule, conduct and document formal employee performance reviews  
  • Maintain availability to work a variety of days and times, including weekends and overnight travel as needed
  • Safely and effectively use and operate all necessary tools and office equipment 
  • Ability to effectively communicate in order to perform and follow job requirements in written and spoken direction
  • Ability to multitask calmly and effectively in a busy, stressful environment 
  • Work in a confined, crowded space of variable light, noise and temperature levels
  • Ability to move and lift up to 10 pounds, frequently move and/or lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally move and/or lift up to 50 pounds
 
Key Responsibilities and Duties
 
  • Coach and train General Managers/Executive Chefs on how to conduct roundtable discussions with employees
  • Advise company executives on employment best practices, issues and trends 
  • Implement, conduct and manage relevant training as needed: employee and labor relations, harassment/discrimination-free training and procedures, legal and compliance training and procedures, care and handling of Lettuce employees, best HR practices, etc. 
  • Proficiency in the use and operation of all necessary tools and equipment including MS Word and Excel
  • Follow all rules, policies, procedures and conditions of employment, including those outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Get along well with others and act as a team player
